Sailing - Bank Holiday EVENT CANCELLED
Either Hamble Point Marina, nr Southampton or possibly Gosport
|
Open
|
event cancelled
TBA
|
|
Full details are still to be finalised but this 4 day extended Bank Holiday weekend opens the opportunity to travel further afield including, if the weather forecast and crew experience permits, cross channel to Normandy or the Channel Islands and so a passport must be carried (Non EU nationals must also carry all necessary visas for travelling to & from the above). We should have a Bavaria 38' (11.6m) this weekend with 8 berths available.
Friday morning: Join the boat during the morning and, after assisting to load up the yacht with food & other essentials (all arranged by the skipper) there will be a briefing on safety & handling of the boat. This will be followed by a discussion on the options for the weekend's sailing. Then, at a time to suit the tides, we will leave the marina & head out to sea. With the extended weekend, our cruising range could encompass any of the ports within the area between Brighton, Normandy, the Channel Islands and Swanage. Wherever we go, we will stop at one or two destinations on the way and return to the home port by late afternoon on Monday.
The yacht will be totally self sufficient and we will sleep and generally eat on board the yacht throughout the weekend. Full boat joining instructions will be issued to all crew, advising where to find the boat and what gear to bring with you. Note that while initial queries regarding berth availablity can be made by e-mail or 'phone, a firm reservation will require payment of the full berth fee. Applications should also include the following information: full postal address, e-mail address & mobile phone number. Also include details of any previous sailing experience (none required but I need to know). BOOK EARLY: To ensure availability of boat. Cost per berth likely to be around £255 for London members. £265 for members of other aIVC clubs as contribution to cost of our additional sailing public liability insurance. Budget £15 per day for expenses for harbour fees, on board grub/grog/ diesel fuel etc. Contact John who will update you on final arrangements for this weekend.
No previous experience necessary: Collectively, the crew will have sufficient experience to handle the boat.

Event Organisers' Meal
Konaki, 5 Coptic Street (Tube: Tottenham Court Road)
|
Open
|
Wed 29 May
|
|
Konaki offers solid Greek cooking based on traditional recipes in comfortable, unpretentious surroundings. It's near to the British Museum.
As a token of appreciation for your contribution, those members who have organised, led or hosted events over the past year are invited to dine here tonight to enjoy a sociable evening with your fellow organisers and with a £10 subsidy on your food bill from the club funds. It's also an opportunity to discuss the running of the club and is partly intended as a replacement for the Activities Committee meetings that fizzled out some years ago. As always, non-organisers are welcome but without benefit of the club contribution!
As a rough price guide their set 3 course dinner, half bottle of wine and service would be about £23 before subsidy; a la carte about £33. Depending on numbers, we may be able to have a special menu on the night.
The book by date of 29 May is the absolute deadline but it would be a great help if you could express your interest well before then. Pay on the night.

The Arts Group
Walkers Of Whitehall, Craig Court

Open

The Arts Group meets every month to swap ideas for theatres, cinemas, concerts, etc., that we can then visit as a group. Last month, for example, we featured adaptations of literary classics both American (F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby) and English (Graham Greene's Travels With My Aunt).
Anyone may organise an event for the Arts Group, so if there's a particular show you'd like to see, feel free to come along and suggest it - other people will probably be interested. Bring your cheque book and your diary to book for events, or just come along for a drink and a chat.
If you can't make it along to the meeting, don't panic - an email will go out on the Broadcast system later tonight with details of events you can still book for (you'll need to respond by noon on Wednesday). For advance warning of things we're planning, look at (or follow) our Twitter feed: http://www.twitter.com/IVCArtsGroup
Future Arts Group meetings will be held on Monday July 1st and Monday August 5th.

Beckenham/Bromley's first pub evening of the month. The venue calls itself a pub but looks more like a wine bar. Its location is immediately beside Penge West railway and Overground station. We try to sit on the lowest level of the building which usually has plenty of room on a Thursday night, but if warm evenings materialise, we may be in the beer garden.

Nature Lovers - Dormouse Weekend
Pierland Wood, near Ruckinge, Kent

Open

Dormice have become very scarce as their habitat is being lost, but well managed woodlands can still support good populations. By special arrangement we will spend the weekend in a privately owned woodland in Kent where there are substantial numbers that are easy to see and can even be handled.
We wil drive to Pierland Wood on the afternoon of Friday 14th to set up camp. We will then visit an excellent Indian restaurant in a nearby village. After that we will return to the camp for a wine and music party in my spacious tent.
Saturday morning will start with a cooked breakfast after which we will join BTCV volunteers in inspecting the dormouse nesting boxes where we should find families of these adorable little animals. Later we will join in some conservation work to improve the woods and conduct some wildlife walks and surveys. In the evening we will have a bonfire and BBQ and more wine & music.
On Sunday we wil continue with the conservation & survey work and later drive back to London. The photo shows a dormouse from my last visit here in 2012.
Travel and food costs will be shared. No conservation or wildlife surveying skills are required but you will need to be willing to rough it a little!
More information here: http://www2.tcv.org.uk/display/kent_pierland_wood We will be joined by members of a nature conservation volunteer group.

This evening we shall go to see a film which may not be mainstream, i.e. where the film would not be one where the scriptwriters all went to the same American writers' school. The film may bear some resemblance to real life and may be subtitled. Recent choices have included 'Lore', a sub-titled post Second World War drama about a Nazi teenager discovering German wartime truths, and 'Side Effects', a thriller using pharmaceutical drugs as a background. We shall probably eat after the film but this depends on its starting time. Roland will be making his selection during the preceding week, but would welcome ideas about suitable films and restaurants. New members are especially welcome, but please note that Roland must be contacted in advance to confirm the meeting place and time.

NINE BELOW ZERO + special guests EDDIE & THE HOT RODS
Two of the most energetic and exciting live bands the UK has ever produced together for one night only.
For three decades Nine Below Zero have delivered an explosive mix of Blues & Rock that never fail to leave their audiences illuminated and exhausted. Featuring the definitive line-up of Dennis Greaves, Mark Feltham, Brendan O’Neill, and Brian Bethell. After thousands of shows together, this incendiary on-stage chemistry has enabled Nine Below Zero to sell-out venues all over Europe.
Eddie & The Hot Rods Special guests (on stage at 7:45pm) are still led by lead singer Barrie Masters. The Hot Rods began life in 1976, when four teenagers from Southend on Sea got together playing their own style of fast energetic Rock ‘n’ Roll and R&B. They soon became a big hit on the London scene, catching the eyes and ears of the music press and the major record companies. Their anthemic hit "Do Anything You Wanna Do" is rightly regarded as one of the UK’s Top 20 best singles of all time.

Sailing - Jurassic Coast Cruise - EVENT FULL
Lymington Yacht Haven (Post Code SO41 3QD)
|
Open
|
EVENT FULL
£155 (£165 for other aIVC)
|
|
Subject to weather and tides, we plan to cruise along the Hampshire & Dorset coasts towards Weymouth or Portland in a Bavaria 38'. The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site and is also Thomas Hardy country. Sparsely populated, rolling countryside ends abruptly at a coast line of high limestone cliffs, interspersed with a few small coves & bays, where we may anchor for a while and soak up the peaceful ambience and the sun's rays.
Join the boat during Friday evening and, after assisting to load up the yacht with food & other essentials (all arranged by the skipper) we will adjourn to the pub to mull over options for the weekend's sailing. The current plan is that we will have an early start on Saturday morning, leaving the Solent via the Hurst narrows and heading west out across Christchurch Bay and into Weymouth Bay, arriving in Weymouth or Portland late afternoon or early evening. On Sunday we retrace our steps arriving back in Lymington by late afternoon.
BOOK EARLY: To ensure availability of boat & a berth at the destination. Cost per berth: £155 for London members. £165 for members of other aIVC clubs as contribution to cost of our additional sailing public liability insurance. Budget £15 per day for expenses for harbour fees, on board grub/grog/ diesel fuel etc.
No previous experience necessary: Collectively, the crew will have sufficient experience to handle the boat.

Richmond to Wimbledon pub amble
Richmond
|
Open
|
|
|
The long warmish days are here so why not join Helen, Des and Rosie the dog for another of their South West London pub ambles? We will head to the river where we will have our first 'rest' and opportunity for a drink at The White Cross one of the riverside pubs. Then it's up Richmond Hill to Richmond Park, reputed to have been a favourite hunting place for Henry VIII. Taking a short break at Pembroke Lodge for tea, we then walk across the beautiful open park, where we may pass by one of the herds of deer, to Wimbledon Common. Crossing the more heathy landscape of the common brings us to The Crooked Billet, a lovely old Youngs pub. Having refreshed ourselves with an ale we leave the common to our next pub The Swan, a Taylor Walker pub close to Wimbledon Village where those that want will be able to get some tasty pub grub and Rosie will enjoy a well deserved packet of crisps and a bowl of water! The final part of our amble takes us down Wimbledon Hill to The Alexandra where there will be the chance of a farewell ale.
Wimbledon station is close to our final pub stop and Wimbledon is also well served with buses for the trip home. About 6.5 miles of easy walking.
We look foorward to seeing you.

Guided Walking Tour: Roman Londinium
Tower Hill

|
|
Join me for another guided walking tour from Daniella. This a 2 hour slow walk around the area with stops for talks given by our guide, ending in a trip to a local pub to chat :)
Roman Londinium : In the Footsteps of the Gladiators
Over 2000 years ago – the City of London simply didn’t exist. A greenfield site which people of the stone and iron ages had simply ignored. But this would all change when the Roman Emperor Claudius sent a force of 40,000 soldiers and elephants – tempted by natural resources and the glories of yet another victory.
It was the Romans who would create Londinium as a military and trading outpost before it became their capital.
On today’s walk we will hear about governors and gladiators, about forums and forts as well as temples and ampitheatres while seeing some of the few remaining parts of Roman Londinium.
Cost per person is £6, this is to be paid in cash on the day of. Please bring correct change. We will meet at Tower Hill Station, Trinity Square Exit for a 2pm start and will end at the Museum of London. A maxium of 30 people can be catered for so please email Ele to book your place.

The sell-out hit of the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe from one of Europe’s hottest theatre companies to explode out of Belgium since Ontroerend Goed.
Valentijn Dhaenens has received universal critical acclaim and has been described as a one-man powerhouse for his thrilling and virtuoso performance in Bigmouth. Using fragments of well-known and lesser known speeches, he shows that in 2,500 years, the tricks of the trade hardly changed and that whilst the absolute truth doesn’t exist, it is just a pretty lie for those who aspire to world power or simply just the hand of their beloved. He who picks his words well, can turn the weakest argument into the strongest.
The theatre seats are unreserved so you may buy your own ticket online. Drop Rhiann an email to let her know you are going and she will let you know meet-up arrangements.

Sailing - Weekend Cruise
Hamble Point Marina, nr Southampton (Post Code PO12 1AH)
|
Open
|
ASAP, to ensure availability of boat.
£147 (£157 for other aIVC)
|
|
This weekend we hope to hire a 9.7m Fulmar sailing yacht. This 5/6 berth boat has an excellent reputation as a fast cruiser. While most yachts nowadays have roller reefing headsails, this boat will be what some call a "proper yacht" as it comes with a full set of separate headsails. This will be good experience for those new to fore deck work. For the more experienced, it will test the memory cells as they try to remember just how that big pile of disorganised canvas could possibly be folded up neatly and coaxed into the small sail bag.
Crew will join the boat during the Friday evening and, after assisting to load up the yacht with grub & other essentials (all provided by the skipper) we will adjourn to the pub to mull over the options for the weekend's sailing. On Saturday morning, after a briefing and at a time dependent on the tides, we will leave the Hamble River, heading either east or west up the Solent, depending on the weather forecast, tides and the crew's preference for the day's destination.. We aim to arrive by late afternoon. There will be time for looking around the destination prior to getting stuck into the evening meal, which will be cooked on board by the crew. A visit to a pub will usually also be fitted in. On Sunday we will return to the home port, arriving by late afternoon. The old village nestles in a narrow ravine at the edge of a wide sweeping bay, which is bounded on the north by Bay Ness and on the south by the lofty cliffs of Ravenscar. We are taking over the "Old School House" which as really good accommodation similar to a Youth Hotel. The idea is a choose of half a week (4 nights) or go the whole hog and stay 8 nights. www.old-school-house.co.uk
Lots of activies possible including walking, cycling, riding and many lovely places to visit. For more details contact Peter.

Joe Louis Walker - Blues guitarist
The Garage, 20-22 Highbury Corner, London N5 1RD
|
Open
|
£19.50
|
|
Multiple Grammy & WC Handy Award winner, Joe Louis Walker is one of the most heralded Blues artists of our time. He is a true powerhouse guitar virtuoso, unique singer and prolific songwriter who has toured the world religiously throughout his career and earned himself a legion of dedicated fans. He has recorded with the likes of BB King, James Cotton, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Huey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, and Ike Turner, with a discography that counts 18 solo albums, 2 live DVD’s, and countless compilations and guest appearances.
Still recording & touring with a vengeance, JLW is already being referred to within the blues world as a "living legend." However, as Walker himself would say, "the best is yet to come!" JLW is currently in the studio working on a new Blues release as well as a Gospel album featuring a myriad of legendary guests. This is JLW’s first and only London performance since two sold out nights at Ronnie Scott’s in October 2010.
JLW is joined for this show only by young British Blues phenomenon Aynsley Lister and his full band, who open the show as very special guests. Reckoned by many to be one of the most exciting young guitarists since Clapton at his peak. Aynsley has youth, good looks, outrageous amounts of talent and a record deal to boot.
Influenced from an early age by the 1960s RnB era, Lister takes these key elements and mixes them with a more current and melodic lyrical approach. He was the only British artist to be featured in Classic Rock’s Top 10 Contemporary Blues Rock Artists.
A unique pairing that’s not to be missed.

We should have the luxury of an Oceanis 423 (12.9m) this weekend with 7 berths available.
Friday morning: Join the boat during the morning and, after assisting to load up the yacht with food & other essentials (all arranged by the skipper) there will be a briefing on safety & handling of the boat. This will be followed by a discussion on the options for the weekend's sailing. Then, at a time to suit the tides, we will leave the Hamble River & head out to sea. This is the penultimate trip of the IVC season. Crew will join the boat, a Southerly 42', during Friday evening and, after assisting to load up the boat with food and other essentials (all arranged by the skipper) we will adjourn to the pub to mull over options for the weekend's sailing. The current plan is that we make an early start on the Saturday morning and join in with a "Fast Cruise" event organised by another club. This consists of a fairly relaxed sail, as part of a flotilla of yachts, following a set course around bouys in the Solent, ending up in Cowes on the Isle of Wight by late afternoon. Each boat will be individually timed around the course and the fastest boat gets bragging rights. In the evening we will join the other crews in the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club (Cowes) for an evening meal and a beer or two. Should either the weather or the preference of the crew decide otherwise, then we would make our way to Cowes via an alternative route. On Sunday we will return to the home port, arriving by late afternoon.
