READERS' GROUP: A BUZZ IN THE MEADOW
Wed 21 Nov 2018 at: 18:30 to 21:00

Reading is primarily a personal pleasure but if you would like to share your love of books with some like-minded people why not join us in our reading group?

We meet as usual to discuss our monthly book but first we'll mark our final meeting of 2018 with  celebratory cocktails in the top floor bar. To allow for drinking time we start slightly earlier at 6.30 pm.

Our book this month is A Buzz in the Meadow by Dave Goulson

We take a rare break from fiction to review this very readable memoir of the author's conversion of his 30 acre farm in France into a refuge for bees and other, mainly insect, wildlife but as Goulson is Professor of Biological Science at Sussex University there's lots of fascinating science included and it ends with a warning of the dire consequences we face if we lose our bio-diversity.

We will also decide on what to read for February.

BIRMINGHAM IVC WEEKEND IN YORK Headline
Fri 30 Nov 2018 to Mon 3 Dec

the “York” weekend

A Birmingham IVC event

Friday 30th Nov to Monday 3rd Dec 2018

Rich in ancient history, York is the perfect holiday destination. Delve into the city's vibrant café culture, take time out to enjoy some of the country's most talented street entertainers or simply watch the world go by while sipping a drink by the river. Visitors to York can enjoy hundreds of attractions, museums, historic buildings, tours, shops, restaurants and bars within the compact walled city.

We are staying at the “Stableside Centre”, offering 4star hostel accommodation, it’s where the jockeys sleep! Beds are short and you should weigh less than 8½ stones. Each room has a wash basin and private toilet with shared shower facilities available. Each room also now has a television and free Wi-Fi. The centre as plenty of free parking.

The city centre is a short distance down the Tadcaster Road.

During the weekend we will have the help of York IVC who will act as host.

Events for December 2018
FRENCH MEAL IN EARLS COURT
Sat 1 Dec 2018 at: 19:30 to 22:00

This delightfully old style French Bistro is a new discovery for me, though it has apparently been there for a number of decades!, akin in its interior to many a  traditional neighbourhood Bistro in various regions of France, offering a comfortingly traditional menu, friendly service and food at surprisingly reasonable prices, the set 3 course meal for £14 (that offers a number of tempting options in each course) offering particularly excellent value, particularly as the dishes sampled were of a surprisingly good standard.  In addition  Bread is brought to the table for no extra charge and their extremely drinkable House Wines are also agreeably reasonable in price. The restaurant is however extremely small and very popular, so early booking for our group will be essential

Mon 3 Dec 2018 at: 18:30 to 21:00

The Arts Group meets every month to swap ideas for theatres, cinemas, concerts, etc., that we can then visit as a group. Last month, for example, we had three centuries' worth of funny stuff, from a revival of an early restoration comedy (William Congreve's The Double Dealer) to a screening of a new Scottish movie (Josie Long's Super November).

Anyone may organise an event for the Arts Group, so if there's a particular show you'd like to see, feel free to come along and suggest it - other people will probably be interested. Bring your cheque book and your diary to book for events, or just come along for a drink and a chat.

BECKENHAM & BROMLEY MYN PUB EVENING IN PENGE
Thu 17 Jan 2019 at: 20:30 - 22:45
Moon And Stars Pub, 164-166 Penge High Street, Penge, London SE20 7QS (Click for Map)

Our regular monthly visit to the Moon and Stars in Penge High Street. This is a Wetherspoon establishment so there is a wide choice of reasonably priced food and drinks that can be enjoyed in a muzak-free atmosphere; Thursday night is curry night in this pub so you won't be eating alone. Look for the IVC name on one of the tables.

We meet from 8.30pm, probably somewhere towards the back and possibly in one of the side-booths. New (and gregarious!) members are especially welcome.

Join us at the world's greatest entertainment festival. After a terrific week at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 we will return in 2019. We will stay in value for money, student accommodation close to the heart of the festival. We will help you navigate your way round the festival which is vast and can be overwhelming. We will organise shared visits to events and several team social get togethers - or you can just do your own thing. Help will be provided with travel arrangements and prebooking of recommended avents - but most events can be booked when you are there.

Contact Dave now for more details and to join the acommodation waiting list. This will cost a little over £200 for the week for your own room in a shared student flat which is basic but comfortable.
