READERS' GROUP: BLONDE
19:00 to 21:00

Reading is primarily a personal pleasure but if you would like to share your love of books with some like-minded people why not join us in our reading group?

Our book this month is Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates

An engrossing  novel of the iconic Maryln Monroe her childhood and life and considered as one of this author's best books. Oates insists it is a work of fiction and should not be regarded as a biography.

We will also decide on what to read for March.

As usual Des would appreciate it if those planning on coming could email him by Tuesday night 23rd  if possible so that he has some idea of numbers.

Meetup NON-DUALITY TALK - JIM NEWMAN
10:30 to 15:30

There are literally a handful of speakers in the apparent manifest world that can shine a light on liberation in a purely descriptive way and Jim Newman is one of them. Jim helped with filming Tony Parsons' meetings for years and now speaks with an uncompromising clarity about the non-dual.

Meetings with Jim Newman uncover the mystery, the unexpected and the indescribable absoluteness of “what is”. Through undermining the illusory normal – the personal – the natural is revealed. In the meetings there is no dependence on logic or reason. Many expressions in the meetings are patently illogical and unreasonable. There is a simple pointing to the undeniable that “what is” is everything, all-inclusive, not two, no real subject, no real object. What is, is not new and simultaneously only new. There is nothing on offer for the person, not even for the expectation, that there should or even could be a different or better “what is”.

There can be a resonance, love, a sense of coming home. The meetings can be permission for “what is” to be what is.

Tickets are priced at £35 for Saturday or Sunday and £60 for both days.  Tickets can be purchased via:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/what-is-is-already-whats-longed-for-with-jim-newman-27th-28th-january-2018-tickets-35750017264

This is a two day event running Sat 10.30 - 15.30 (with a break for lunch) and Sunday 1pm-5pm (including a short break).  Lunch is not provided but the bar serves hot food and snacks and refreshments.

POLISH MEAL IN SOUTH KENSINGTON
19:30 to 22:00

Ognisko is probably the most authentic Polish restaurant in London, that is in a large and delightfullly opulent room situated in within the wonderfully elegant Polish Club premesis.

Their small menu changes on a monthly basis but ever includes hearty traditonal Polish dishes and the standard of cooking is impressively high

Dishes I have particularly enjoyed here have included their Blini and Soup starters and their Duck and Chicken dishes (3 or 4 fish options and a couple of Vegetarian ones are also available)

Prices here are slightly higher than some of the usual Restaurants I host, (starters around £6 - £8.50 and Main Courses around £16- £20) but I think, worth it taking into account both the quality of cooking and ambience of the venue

Average cost of a meal with drinks will be somwhere around £40

Their House Wines are also excellent as are the Polish Vodkas which come in a variety of flavours and are an agreeable way to round off ones meal!

BECKENHAM & BROMLEY MYN PUB EVENING IN ANERLEY
20:00 to 22:50
Beckenham/Bromley's first Meet-Your-Neighbour pub evening of the month. There has been a pub on this site for at least 200 years and used to serve Anerley Pleasure Gardens as well as the adjacent canal. The present pub is pure Victorian and after a Gas explosion 38 years ago when everything 'went out through the windows', Samuel Smiths brewery bought the remains and restored it in every detail. The pub is easy to find as it is beside the up-line platform of Anerley Station (Overground and National Rail), i.e. the opposite side from the booking hall. Most members will be eating tonight as the food and drink prices are normal pub prices, i.e. slightly more expensive than Wetherspoons'. Please note that last orders for meals must be placed before 8.20pm. New members are especially welcome.

BIRD WATCHING ON MERSEA ISLAND, ESSEX
10:00 to 16:00

A days Winter bird watching on Mersea Island.

Mersea Island is the most easterly inhabited island in the UK, situated off the coast of Essex and 9 miles southeast of Colchester. It provides a rich diversity of coastal species especially during the winter but also during spring and autumn migration.

We will head for Cudmore Grove Country Park. This is the best base for visiting birdwatchers because of the large car park (fee payable), toilet facilities and seasonal cafe.

The park offers a good vantage point for waders on the Mersea flats at low tide, whilst high tide during the winter months can produce Slavonian and Great Crested Grebes, Red-breasted Mergansers, divers and the occasional seaduck.

Adjoining the park are 11 hectares of grazing fields also owned by the ECC and managed as a nature reserve primarily for the regular winter flock of Brent Geese. Positive water management of water levels have seen good numbers of waders and wildfowl using this area as a feeding and roosting site especially during winter, spring and autumn.

On the north side of the park there is a hide which overlooks a pond where the occasional Kingfisher and Water Rail occur plus a roost of Little Egret at dusk. Stock Dove and Kestrel nest nearby and Little Grebe, Mallard, Gadwall and Tufted Duck are all regular visitors.

We will travel from London by car leaving at 10am, which will enable us also to explore the island. After we have finished exploring we will head for West Mersae to fnd a suitable pub. The Fox Inn is open all day and gets good reviews.

Phone Dave for car travel arrangements.

This is a Wetherspoon establishment so there is a wide choice of reasonably priced food and drinks that can be enjoyed in a muzak-free atmosphere; Thursday night is curry night in this pub so you won't be eating alone. Look for the IVC name on one of the tables.

We meet from 8.30pm, probably somewhere towards the back and possibly in one of the side-booths. New (and gregarious!) members are especially welcome.

READERS' GROUP: A LEGACY OF SPIES
19:00 to 21:00

Reading is primarily a personal pleasure but if you would like to share your love of books with some like-minded people why not join us in our reading group?

Our book this month is A Legacy of Spies by John Le Carre

Le Carre revisits the Cold War days of some of his most famous earlier creations as his now elderly protagonists are summoned to account for their actions then by their successors who inhabit a changed world.

'a truly wonderful, morally complex, politically astute novel written with elegance and panache.' The Scotsman.

We will also decide on what to read for April.

As usual Des would appreciate it if those planning on coming could email him by Tuesday night 2st  if possible so that he has some idea of numbers.

LONDON IVC COMEDY PLAY!
19:00 to 23:00

IVC COMEDY PLAY!

A short comedy presented by London IVC

THE COCKPIT THEATRE, MONDAY 12 MARCH 2018 AT 7PM

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT!

This evening London IVC presents its very own fifteen minute comedy play at the Cockpit theatre, Gateforth Street, London, NW8, from 7 pm. So come along and see familiar IVC members in the cast!

ENTRY FEE ONLY £1!

IVC COMEDY PLAY

Tonight the Metropolis Hotel in London is hosting the annual party for members of London Intervarsity Club (IVC), an easy-going social club which organises meals, parties and theatre trips for its members. So in the normal course of events it should be a typical night for the hotel as it caters for the guests of London IVC. It doesn’t quite work out that way however when Carlos, the world’s worst international terrorist, wreaks vengeance at the event for having been refused membership of London IVC!

Please ensure you get there early to get a seat. Tickets are only available at the ticket office on the night (at £1 each). Please also note that the IVC play is part of the 'Theatre in the Pound' event at the Cockpit theatre that evening, which consists of some six different acts (including the IVC play). We will only know on the night in what order the acts will come on stage. Please try to stay to watch and support all the acts. The audience will also be invited to give feedback after each performance.

NARROW BOAT CRUISE ON THE LLANGOLLEN CANAL

We join  IVC members from around the UK for a week’s canal cruise, starting and ending in Middlewich, Cheshire.  We will travel out for three and a half days to Llangollen then return. In all there will be seven nights afloat. The emphasis will be on a leisurely pace and canal side diversion rather than eating up miles. The cost is £250.

The price per berth is overstated with intent to reimburse if the trip is fully subscribed. We have the Fjord Viscount, which sleeps eight, and six berths are already booked. The price of £250 will pay for a boat if only five go. The balance must be paid by the end of January 2018. If more than eight people subscribe then a returnable deposit will be taken from the ninth person pending the subscription of a tenth person and the booking of a second vessel. The cost will be equitably divided between all those who subscribe.

Join us at the world's greatest entertainment festival. After a terrific week at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 we will return in 2018. We will stay in value for money, student accommodation close to the heart of the festival. We will help you navigate your way round the festival which is vast and can be overwhelming. We will organise shared visits to events and several team social get togethers - or you can just do your own thing. Help will be provided with travel arrangements and prebooking of recommended avents - but most events can be booked when you are there.

Contact Dave now for more details and to join the acommodation list. This will cost around £200 for the week for your own room in a shared student flat which is basic but comfortable. Provisional bookings are required at this stage for purposes of booking the accomodation, which has to be done well in advance. Possible option of a two week stay if there is enough interest.
