READERS' GROUP: A DARK ADAPTED EYE
19:00 to 21:00

Reading is primarily a personal pleasure but if you would like to share your love of books with some like-minded people why not join us in our reading group?

Our book this month is A Dark Adapted Eye by Barbara Vine.

A rich, complex and beautifully crafted novel' P.D. James

The prize-winning classic that 'changed the thriller landscape', with a new foreword from Val McDermid.

Vera Hillyard. Aunt. Mother. Murderess.

Faith Severn's life has long been overshadowed by the mystery surrounding her aunt. A respectable woman who committed a crime so terrible she was hung for it.

Now, the time has come to piece her story together.

What secret caused two devoted sisters to turn from love to hate?
And was Vera born a killer. .  Or was she driven to it?

We will also decide on what to read for November.

GREEK MEAL IN CAMDEN TOWN
19:30 to 22:00

Alexander is currently my favourite of the  Greek Cypriot restaurants in the Camden Town area, with typical Greek Taverna ambience and friendly service, which serves  extremely generous portions of very nicely cooked Greek and Greek Cypriot dishes; their ‘Mixed Grill’, ‘Steak cooked in wine’ and‘King Prawns cooked in garlic, butter & wine’  being 3 dishes I would particularly recommend!  And their portions are such that starters are vey often not necessary

The restaurant is quite a popular so please book by mid-day on Thursday 21st September the latest.

VISIT TO CASSIOBURY PARK NATURE RESERVE IN WATFORD
11am - 3pm

Discover, in a corner of Cassiobury Park, a wildlife haven close to the heart of a bustling town.

The wet habitats found on the reserve were once shallow watercress beds, fed with water from the river through a series of ditches. These have developed into marshland and open pools, surrounded by wet woodland of alder and willow. This provides valuable cover and nesting sites for birds. There are also areas of grassland where birds such as goldfinches and greenfinches feed on the seed heads of thistles and teasels. Water rail, lesser spotted woodpeckers and siskins are possible birds here.

Meet at Watford Station (Metroploitan Line) at 11am. After we have finished exploring the reserve we will retire around 2pm to the Essex Arms, Langley Way, WD17 3EG. This has real ales and pub comfort food.

TALK: THE ROMAN PORT OF LONDON
12:00 to 16:00

This is the first monthly lunchtime talk of this academic year, on the theme of Roman London. They last from 1pm - 2pm, with a question session after.   The talks are aimed at non academics, are easy to follow, and are fully illustrated. Printed transcripts of all talks are available, often ready straight after the talk.

Despite Roman vessels being discovered in London, the actual port wasn"t uncovered until excavations in 1973. In a long series of digs, the  harbour was gradually revealed, with  some surprising results. Often it was where it wasn"t expected to be.

We try and get  seats together as the talks are popular and are often completely full.  We always go for a coffee and a chat afterwards.

20:00 - 23.00
The Anerley Arms, 2 Ridsdale Road, Anerley, London
Postcode/Map Ref:     SE20 8AG
Beckenham/Bromley's first Meet-Your-Neighbour pub evening of the month. There has been a pub on this site for at least 200 years and used to serve Anerley Pleasure Gardens as well as the adjacent canal. The present pub is pure Victorian and after a Gas explosion 38 years ago when everything 'went out through the windows', Samuel Smiths brewery bought the remains and restored it in every detail. The pub is easy to find as it is beside the up-line platform of Anerley Station (Overground and National Rail), i.e. the opposite side from the booking hall. Most members will be eating tonight as the food and drink prices are normal pub prices, i.e. slightly more expensive than Wetherspoons'. Please note that last orders for meals must be placed before 8.20pm. New members are especially welcome.

TRIAL PUBLIC SPEAKING MEETING AT LONDON ATHENIANS
19:15 to 21:30

London Athenians Toastmasters Club is one of a growing number of Toastmaster groups within London.  It is also the only club in the city that meets weekly, except for Christmas and New Year weeks.

Do you have spare time on Tuesday evenings?   The meetings are scheduled to start at 7.15pm but Jacyntha will be there today from 7pm and you are more than welcome to join her and discover if Toastmasters is for you.   As a form of identification she will make sure that a printed IVC Bulletin is clearly visible, but should that fail then do phone her and ask her to identify herself!

On leaving most members stay briefly after the meeting to have a quick drink in the bar.  That way we get to know one another which gives the event a social as well as an educational feel.  This Club is Jacyntha's Toastmaster "home" and speaking personally she has made a number of good froends during her membership.

FRENCH MEAL AT EARLS COURT
19:30 to 22:00

This delightfully old style French Bistro is a new discovery for me, though it has apparently been there for a number of decades!, akin in its interior to many a  traditional neighbourhood Bistro in various regions of France, offering a comfortingly traditional menu, friendly service and food at surprisingly reasonable prices. The restaurant is however extremely small and very popular, so early booking for our group will be essential, so if you would like to attend please book with Paul by mid-day on Tuesday  24th October the very latest. 7.30pm

Back by popular request - we loved the food here last time we visited. So lets treat ourselves to some serious meat dishes at reasonable prices! This place serves well recommended steaks as you would expect from an Argentinian restaurant.  And Thursday night is live music night.

And of course Argentinian wine to accompany the food would make a spot on treat. Located in the heart of Greenwich close to the DLR.

Phone Dave to book a place.

REGULAR 3RD FRIDAY EATING AND DRINKING IN KEW
19:30 to 22:30

Another year is drawing to a close and the open wood fires at The Botanist will probably be burning bright by now!

Join us to chat, drink and eat, or just to warm yourself in front of the fire!   The food at The Botanist is good and reasonably priced for the area, the bar is well stocked.  It is a pub in which you can hear yourself (and others) speak, even on most Friday evenings!  The subjects we talk about are topical, varied and even gossipy, and we look forward to your contribution!  Do drop in!

Buses 65 (Ealing Broadway to Kingston via Brentford and Richmond) and 391 (Fulham Broadway to Richmond via Hammersmith, Gunnesbury (LT and Overground), Kew Gardens (also LT and Overground) stop close to The Botanist.  Alight at the Mortlake Road stop.

Kew Gardens and Kew Bridge (to Clapham Junction) stations are walkable, and there is usually ample of free parking available on a Friday evening.

A WEEK AT THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL Headline
12:00 to 12:00

Join us at the world's greatest entertainment festival. After a terrific week at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 we will return in 2018. We will stay in value for money, student accommodation close to the heart of the festival. We will help you navigate your way round the festival which is vast and can be overwhelming. We will organise shared visits to events and several team social get togethers - or you can just do your own thing. Help will be provided with travel arrangements and prebooking of recommended avents - but most events can be booked when you are there.

Contact Dave now for more details and to join the acommodation list. This will cost around £200 for the week for your own room in a shared student flat which is basic but comfortable. Provisional bookings are required at this stage for purposes of booking the accomodation, which has to be done well in advance. Possible option of a two week stay if there is enough interest.

Join London IVC to join us!
