Reading is primarily a personal pleasure but if you would like to share your love of books with some like-minded people why not join us in our reading group?

Our book this month is The Unquiet Dead.

In this important debut novel, Ausma Zehanat Khan has written a compelling and provocative mystery exploring the complexities of identity, loss, and redemption.

We will also decide on what to read for December.

As usual Des would appreciate it if those planning on coming could email him by Tuesday night 21st if possible so that he has some idea of numbers.

MARTHA HIGH WITH OSAKA MONAURAIL
19:00 to 23:00

Martha High, James Brown’s Original Soul Sister meets Japan’s Heaviest Funk Crew.

Osaka Monaurail are led by Ryo Nakata who have taken inspiration from the music of James Brown to create their own unique sound since their formation in 1992.

Osaka Monaurail take us back to the origins of the funk of the 60s and 70s: a flawless rhythm section, unrestrained brass riffs, tailor-made costumes, choreography set to the millimeter and kilos of sweat left on the dance floor.

Under the Bridge is a newish but old-style venue with reasonable bar prices and no discernible dress code so no-one will feel out of place. It's in Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea F.C. grounds and just 5 minutes from Fulham Broadway tube station.

Paul saw Osaka Monaurail at the 100 Club last year and they were a blast. Buy your own ticket at http://underthebridge.co.uk/events/martha-high-with-osaka-monaurail/ and email Paul who will arrange a meet up.

BIRD WATCHING AT CLIFFE POOLS, NORTH KENT
10:00 to 16:00

A visit to the RSPB reserve at Cliffe Pools.

Cliffe Pools nature reserve offers a remote landscape with open horizons and skies - ideal for long summer walks and attracting spectacular numbers of wintering waders. A number of trails at varied lengths afford great views over the pools, the wildlife, and the River Thames running alongside.

Winter birds include:

Winter wader and duck numbers build up on the pools and lagoons, with impressive high-tide roosts of up to 7,000 dunlins, 2,000 lapwings, with other species including redshanks and grey plovers. Wet winters can see up to 3,000 dabbling ducks (teals, wigeons, shovelers, mallards, gadwalls and pintails) mainly on the northern pools. Coots and diving ducks, eg. pochards and tufted ducks, build up into the low hundreds with smaller numbers of goldeneyes. There is also the occasional scaup or red-necked, black-necked or slavonian grebe. Hunting raptors in the scrub and grassland areas include hen and marsh harriers, merlins and peregrines. There are winter thrush and finch flocks around the hawthorns.

We will also be looking for the major influx of hawfinches that has been reported this winter.

We will seek refreshment at the Six Bells pub in Cliffe village.

Contact Dave to book and for car sharing. We will leave London at 10am to get plenty of light.

BECKENHAM & BROMLEY MYN PUB EVENING IN ANERLEY
20:00 to 23:00
Beckenham/Bromley's first Meet-Your-Neighbour pub evening of the month. There has been a pub on this site for at least 200 years and used to serve Anerley Pleasure Gardens as well as the adjacent canal. The present pub is pure Victorian and after a Gas explosion 38 years ago when everything 'went out through the windows', Samuel Smiths brewery bought the remains and restored it in every detail. The pub is easy to find as it is beside the up-line platform of Anerley Station (Overground and National Rail), i.e. the opposite side from the booking hall. Most members will be eating tonight as the food and drink prices are normal pub prices, i.e. slightly more expensive than Wetherspoons'. Please note that last orders for meals must be placed before 8.20pm. New members are especially welcome.

12:00 to 12:00

Join us at the world's greatest entertainment festival. After a terrific week at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 we will return in 2018. We will stay in value for money, student accommodation close to the heart of the festival. We will help you navigate your way round the festival which is vast and can be overwhelming. We will organise shared visits to events and several team social get togethers - or you can just do your own thing. Help will be provided with travel arrangements and prebooking of recommended avents - but most events can be booked when you are there.

Contact Dave now for more details and to join the acommodation list. This will cost around £200 for the week for your own room in a shared student flat which is basic but comfortable. Provisional bookings are required at this stage for purposes of booking the accomodation, which has to be done well in advance. Possible option of a two week stay if there is enough interest.
