WORKSHOP ON READING THE TAROT CARDS
Sat 2 Mar 2019 at: 11:30 to 18:00
The Knights Templar, 95 Chancery Lane, Off Carey St. WC2A 1DT (Click for Map)

AFTERNOON WORKSHOP ON READING THE TAROT CARDS -THE MAJOR ARCANA

BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL-DEALDLINE BY 23RD FEBRUARY

Due to the success of the Tarot Talk in January Erica (our professional teacher and reader) has offered to do a couple of training sessions for those members who wish to be able to read the cards accurately and confidently.

It is possible to do readings by using only one section of the pack and today we will learn how to use the first part of the deck - the Major Arcana.  This section deals with the client (querant) and the lessons in life they need to learn. By the end of the day members will be able to do several types of readings using this section of the cards.

This is a fun day though full-on. There will be a lunch break at 11.30pm and a tea break at 4.00pm. We will need to leave the premises at 6.00 promptly

You will need to bring with you your own pack of cards. If you don’t have your own set, you will need to buy a pack. We will be looking at the pictures and symbols, therefore Erica suggests the Mythic Tarot, or the Hanson Roberts. Failing that the Ryder Waite pack, though these pictures are not as clear as the other sets suggested.

Booking is essential as Erica needs to know the number of handouts to have available–PLEASE BOOK BY THE DEADLINE - 23RD FEB.

The charge £15 covers handouts and costs.

MEETING:     Upstairs in the far back area. Meet at 11.30 for a prompt start at 12noon. Parking in Chancery Lane on Saturdays, the nearest tube Chancery Lane - Central Line and buses frequent Fleet Street and High
COST:     £15

LETS LEARN BACKGAMMON
Sat 2 Mar 2019 at: 18:30 to 22:30
Penderalls Oak, 283-288 High Holborn WC1V 7HP (Click for Map)

Here’s an evening with a difference!! Come and join us for an evening of playing the ancient game of Backgammon that is becoming increasingly popular, and trendy.

Erica will talk through the rules and strategy, give a couple of demonstration games with members, before letting you practice, under her eagle eye.

Erica has been playing for several years and teaches newcomers the game, at a Meetup group that plays regularly in the West End.

We will meet at 6.30 for those that are new to the game. This gives us time to grab a bite and a drink, and go through the rules.  It’s an easy game to learn and play and thoroughly enjoyable.

All levels welcome.  If you have a board please bring it along.

Please ring Erica if you are coming to ensure the space she has reserved is large enough, as this can be increased.

MEETING:     A space has been reserved for us at the back of the pub near the beer garden.Nearest Tube Chancery Lane. Parking in Chancery Lane or outside the pub on High Holborn.

ITALIAN MEAL AT TUFNELL PARK
Sat 2 Mar 2019 at: 19:30 to 22:00
Spaghetti House, 169 Fortess Rd, London NW5 2HR NW5 2HR (Click for Map)

Spaghetti House  in Tufnell Park (no relation whatsoever to the 'chain' of the same name) is my latest 'find'  An independent Italian Bistro with informal decor conveniently situated directly opposite Tufnell Park tube station that has friendly and obliging service and  a small menu of traditional Italian dishes prepared really well, and prices that are eminently reasonable. What's not to like!

Every dish I have so far eaten here has been delicious, and portions are generous enough to make starters superfluous. The average price of Pasta dishes being between £10 and £13 and Meat and Fish main courses between £12 and £16.50 (inclusive of Vegetables) and their reasonably price Housewines are also excellent. Average price for a full meal with drinks somewhere around £35.  Such a place as this is nowadays a rarity in 21st Century London, and I invite you  to join me here for an enjoyable evening. Please book by midday on Wednesday 27th February the latest

MEETING:     7.25pm at ticket barrier at Tufnell Park tube station or 7.30 at IVC table in the Restaurant

3RD FRIDAY SOCALIZING IN THE BOTANIST, KEW GREEN
Fri 15 Mar 2019 at: 19:30 to 22:00

This pub is reasonably quiet so it is possible to speak to other group members and to expect a response!   This is one of the reasons we come here on a Friday evening!   Generally speaking we are a chatty/gossipy group!   Other reasons are the food is reasonable, rising to good, competively priced and the bar is well stocked with guest ales, ciders and sometimes spirits.  Why not join us sometime?

Buses 65 (Ealing Broadway to Kingston via Richmond and Brentford) and 391 (Fulham Broadway to Richmond via Hammersmith, Chiswick and Kew Gardens station) stop almost outside the The Botanist: alight at the Mortlake Road bus stop,

Kew Bridge station is just across the River with 4 trains an hour in each direction and via Clapham Junction,  But be warned, the height gap between the platform and the train is huge, particularly on the destination Waterloo (the up) side.

There is also ample free parking outside The Botanist in the evenings.

So, joining us is easy!  I hope you manage to!

3RD FRIDAY SOCALIZING IN THE BOTANIST, KEW GREEN
Fri 19 Apr 2019 at: 19:30 to 22:00

There are many routes by public transport to get to The Botanist, and there is plenty of free onstreet parking in the evenings.

Buses 65 (Ealing Broadway to Kingston via Brentford and Richmond (station)) and 391 Fulham Broadway to Richmond station via Hammersmith, Chiswick, and Kew Gardens station) are frequent and stop 2 minutes from The Botanist.   Alight at The Mortlake Road stop.

There are 4 trains an hour in both directions from Kew Bridge station which is walkable and just across the River.  Trains go to Clapham Junction.   The drawback at Kew Bridge station is that the height of the (newish) trains that come into the platform at a height which means some could have difficulty getting on and off!

Kew Gardens station (Underground and Overground) is also walkable - about 8 minutes walk in a different direction.  No large gaps there!

I note that the IVC trip to see the Cherry Trees in bloom in Japan has been delayed for a year.  There is a Cherry Tree display in Kew Gardens.  If enough people are interested and send me an email and a phone number we can try and organize a trip to see the locally based Cherry Trees in bloom by arranging an additional afternoon meeting before this one!

Lokkanta is a small casual style Turkish Bistro (akin to many an eating place in Istanbul) that has friendly and obliging service, an authenic Turkish menu and excellent value prices, and on each of my visits here I have been impressed with their excellent Turkish cooking made with good fresh ingredients.  The grilled meats served with rice and salad are particularly delicious, and on  previous visits they have even given a ‘free’  (good) Mixed Meze platter' to each table, with every meal, in which instance starters become not necessary! Their House Wines are also good (and reasonably priced), as is their and Turkish Coffee

A RETURN TO THE LASS ..
Fri 17 May 2019 at: 19:30 to 22:00

FOR A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION ...

The Lass O'Richmond Hill was the original haunt for our 3rd Friday socializing, then it closed for some months before re-opening as a Young's pub, and we re-visit a couple of times each year.   It is (almost) Jenny's local pub, and Jenny has a May birthday, so do come and help her celebrate.

The food at Young's pub is good, if slightly pricey, which is why you might want to look at the first of the websites listed below.  There you can sign up for emails from The Lass and also get details of their special offers.   If the weather is very warm in May though you might prefer to just drink liquids!

The 371 bus is the only one that goes near to The Lass O'Richmond Hill.  There are at least 4 buses an hour and they do run accurately to timetable.   This route runs from Norbiton (Kingston Hospital) via central Kingston, Ham, Petersham, Richmond and on to Manor Circus Richmond (Sainsburys super store).  To get to The Lass you alight at the American University stop, which is at the top of Richmond Hill and near to the Park gate, and the pub is immediately visible.

I hope you will join Jenny at this meeting: we'd all like to see you.

ITALIAN MEAL NEAR ARCHWAY
Sat 18 May 2019 at: 19:30 to 22:00

Fabrizio has for some years been one of my favourite eateries.  A small neighbourhood  neighbourhood Italian restaurant and Pizzeria on Highgate Hill, opposite the Whittington Hospital (a mere 5 minutes climb from Archway station), with a cosy Bistro-ish feel to it and a user-friendly menu of traditional Italian dishes at reasonable prices, majoring on Pizzas and Pasta dishes (both of which they do particuarly well)  but their menu also including a few Meat and Fish dishes and always includes a number of  tempting ‘specials of the day’

Portions are generally quite generous and hey also do good and reasonably priced Italian Wines by the glass, and the food eaten on all of my vists here has ever been of a high standard, so join me in making this a great evening.

BACK TO THE BOTANIST FOR MID-YEAR SOCAILISING ...
Fri 21 Jun 2019 at: 19:30 to 22:00

where, amongst other things we could be discussing the (hot) weather: where the year has flown by to; ... how many days it is until Christmas - amongst more weighty chit chat and gossip!  Do join us.

The Botanist has a well stocked bar, and usually interesting guest ciders, beers, ales and sometimes guest spirits.  The pub menu is good and reasonably well-priced for the area although the dessert menu is limited!

Buses 65 (Ealing Broadway to Kingston via Brentford and Richmond station) and 391 (Fulham Broadway to Richmond via Hammersmith, Chiswick and Kew Gardens station) stop 2 minutes from the pub.  Alight at the Mortlake Road bus stop.

Kew Bridge station with trains to Clapham Junction is walkable across the River.

A WEEK AT THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL Headline
Sat 10 Aug 2019 to Sat 17 Aug

Join us at the world's greatest entertainment festival. After a terrific week at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 we will return in 2019. We will stay in value for money, student accommodation close to the heart of the festival. We will help you navigate your way round the festival which is vast and can be overwhelming. We will organise shared visits to events and several team social get togethers - or you can just do your own thing. Help will be provided with travel arrangements and prebooking of recommended avents - but most events can be booked when you are there.

Contact Dave now for more details and to join the acommodation waiting list. This will cost a little over £200 for the week for your own room in a shared student flat which is basic but comfortable.
